The actual title of our film was unclear for a while, but we knew what approximate connotations it should possess. We knew that it should involve some sort of reference to Gothic Horror and not already be a film title. Furthermore, we wanted the title to be short, a word or two only as to draw our audiences attention to premise of the film. As the plot of our film is circumferences the idea of being buried alive, we decided to choose something that reflected the same idea: being trapped. Below are listed some of the words we considered.
Buried: Does not have a very Gothic 'vibe' and already a film title from 2010.
Confined: This had more of a rehabilitation/prison feel to it, which was not appropriate.
Trapped/Entrapment: Seemed too typical and 'teenage problem' like. Also not very Gothic and Entrapment is already a film from 1999.
Concealed: This made it sound like someone was attempting to hide something intentionally or had a secret. Again, not what we were looking for.
Inhumed: A synonym for buried: Has the connotations of death and tombs- gothic.
Incarcerated/Restrained: Much like confined, it gives the impression of a more crime centered film. Restrained may call to mind psychiatric clinic or a hostage.
We then considered using antonyms to create juxtaposition such as:
Freedom: Not very gothic, otherwise, could have worked.
Release/Liberate: The tone of these words imply a joyful or happy event such as a granting of bail.
Independent: The essence of this calls to mind a child growing up. Definitely not what we are going for.
To conclude, R.I.P was suggested to us. It it is Gothic, short, succinct and encompasses the ambiance of our film.
